Dear Parents:
This September, all Challenge to Excellence students in Grade 3 and 5 will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT 7). This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.
The CogAT is comprised of three subsections:
The results of these tests will serve several functions. First and foremost, the scores and reports will be used to inform instructional practices in the classroom. The scores will guide efforts to adapt learning opportunities to meet the needs and abilities of the students. The scores are also used as ONE component of the body of evidence to determine areas of strength and possible identification for gifted programming. Scores and reports from 5th grade testing will also be used in transition to middle school and help guide the creation of individual plans for early college and career readiness in conjunction with the Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP).
You can help your student do his/her best on the CogAT by encouraging him/her to approach the testing with a positive attitude, and by making sure he/she has a good night’s sleep the night before testing, and a good breakfast each morning of testing.
YOU WILL RECEIVE RESULTS FROM YOUR STUDENT’S HOMEROOM TEACHER DURING PARENT / TEACHER CONFERENCES OCTOBER 20, 2017.
We appreciate your ongoing support. If you have any questions regarding the information in this letter click here for more information and contact information.

These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.
The CogAT is comprised of three subsections:
- Verbal: Measures a child’s ability to remember and transform sequences of English words, to understand them and to make inferences and judgments about them.
- Quantitative: Measures a child’s understanding of basic quantitative concepts and relationships that are essential for learning mathematics. Tasks measure both the understanding of relational concepts and the student’s ability to discover relationships and to figure out a rule or principle that explains them.
- Non-Verbal: Measures reasoning using pictures and geometric shapes.
The results of these tests will serve several functions. First and foremost, the scores and reports will be used to inform instructional practices in the classroom.
